หอศิลป พีระศรี (Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art — BIMA) คือพื้นที่ศิลปะที่ถูกเรียกว่า “หอศิลป์สาธารณชน” แห่งแรกของประเทศไทย หรือที่อาจารย์ชาตรี ประกิตนนทการ บอกว่า เปรียบเสมือนบรรพบุรุษของหอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร หรือ BACC ก็ว่าได้ เกิดขึ้นจากแนวความคิดของ ศ.ศิลป์ พีระศรี ที่อยากให้ประเทศไทยมีหอศิลป์ดีๆ ที่ได้มาตรฐาน จึงเกิดเป็นหอศิลป พีระศรีแห่งนี้ขึ้นมา ด้วยพื้นที่ใช้งานสำหรับการทำกิจกรรมเชิงศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมที่หลากหลาย เปิดกว้างและไม่จำกัดกรอบของคำว่า “ศิลปะ” ที่เปิดทำการเป็นครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2517 โดยมี ม.ร.ว พันธุ์ทิพย์ บริพัตร เป็นผู้สนับสนุนหลัก จนกระทั่งหอศิลปได้ปิดตัวในปี 2531 และกลายเป็นอาคารที่ถูกทิ้งร้างมากกว่า 36 ปี ด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมบรูทัลลิสต์ที่เน้นความตรงไปตรงมาของโครงสร้างและวัสดุ ผ่านรูปทรงเรขาคณิตที่เรียบง่าย ที่ทำให้แม้เวลาผ่านไปหลายสิบปีตึกแห่งนี้ยังคงความโมเดิร์นและน่าดึงดูดอยู่เสมอ

ด้วยการนำทัพของ ‘ชาตรี ประกิตนนทการ’ และทีม Revitalizing Bangkok เพื่อปลุกชีวิตหอศิลปและบอกเล่าประวัติศาสตร์ความเคลื่อนไหวของศิลปะสมัยใหม่ในยุคนั้นกลับมาสู่พื้นที่สำคัญแห่งนี้อีกครั้งด้วยผลงานศิลปะจากศิลปินฝีมือดีที่ไม่เคยมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับตึกแห่งนี้ในอดีตเลย อาทิ ศิลปิน Alex Face ด้วยผลงานซากปรักหักพังของประติมากรรมที่กระจัดกระจายอยู่บนผนังอาคาร มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ ด้วยผลงาน Pink Man ในชุดสูทสีชมพูสะท้อนแสง ปรากฎตัวตามย่านธุรกิจ ต่าง ๆ ในเมือง เพื่อสะท้อนบรรยากาศของเมืองช่วงก่อนวิกฤตต้มยำกุ้ง และผลงานจากทีม Remembering BIMA ที่ได้รวบรวมคลิปสัมภาษณ์ว่าด้วยประวัติศาสตร์ของ BIMA จากผู้เกี่ยวข้องในอดีตด้วยความยาวกว่า 2 ชั่วโมง และผลงานจากศิลปินอีกหลายท่าน เพื่อทะลุกรอบความเป็นหอศิลปไปสู่บริบทใหม่ของพื้นทางศิลปะที่มีอยู่เดิม

ในวันที่ 28 – 30 มีนาคม 2567 นี้ หอศิลป พีระศรี ได้เปิดพื้นที่อีกครั้งกับโครงการ Revitalizing Bangkok Through Art and Architecture: A Case Study on BIMA's Vision for the City's Future ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยนิทรรศการแสดงผลงานของศิลปินข้างต้น วงสัมมนาเนื้อหาเข้มข้นที่ BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY, Photo Walk เดินถ่ายภาพสถาปัตยกรรมกับ Foto_momo , รวมทั้งงานฉายหนังกับ Doc Club & Pub. เพื่อพูดคุยกันถึงเรื่องการจัดอีเวนต์ศิลปะและ Gentrification (การแปลงเปลี่ยนโฉมเมืองเพื่อเปลี่ยนชนชั้นหรือ “การทำให้เมืองเป็นย่านผู้ดี”)

นอกจากนี้ใครที่ไปเดินดูงาน อย่าลืมตามหา graffiti ลงบนอาคารหอศิลป พีระศรี ที่คุณ Alex Face ได้พ่นกระจายอยู่รอบตัวอาคารทั้งภายในภายนอกกันนะ แล้วไปร่วมรำลึกฟื้นชีวิตหอศิลป พีระศรีด้วยกัน “จากอดีตอันรุ่งเรืองและปัจจุบันที่ร่วงโรยทิ้งร้าง โดยหวังว่า หอศิลป พีระศรี จะมีโอกาสกลับฟื้นคืนชีวิตอีกครั้ง” นิทรรศการเหลือเวลาให้เข้าชมอีกเพียง 2 วันเท่านั้น คือวันศุกร์ที่ 29 มีนาคม และ วันเสาร์ 30 มีนาคม ตั้งแต่เวลา 15:00 - 20:30 น. ห้ามพลาดเด็ดขาด!!
The Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art (BIMA) is an art space known as Thailand's first "Public Art Gallery." It could be considered the predecessor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), as mentioned by Professor Chatri Prakitnontakan. BIMA was born from the idea of Prof. Silpa Bhirasri, who wished Thailand to have a quality standard art gallery. Thus, this Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art was established, offering a variety of cultural and artistic activity spaces, open and unbounded by the definition of "art." It opened in 1974 and was primarily supported by MR Pantip Paribatra until it closed in 1988. The building, abandoned for over 36 years, features Brutalist architecture that emphasizes straightforward structure and materials, with simple geometric forms that keep it modern and appealing despite the decades.

Under the leadership of Chatri Prakitnontakan' and the Revitalizing Bangkok team, the life of the art gallery is reinvigorated to once again share the history and movement of modern art from that era in this significant space. It features artworks by distinguished artists who have never been associated with this building before, such as artist Alex Face with works of the ruins of sculptures scattered on the building walls, Manit Sriwanichpoom with works of Pink Man in a reflective pink suit appearing in various business districts of the city to reflect the pre-Tom Yum Goong crisis atmosphere and works from the Remembering BIMA team that have compiled over two hours of interview clips about BIMA's history from past associates, as well as works from many other artists to break through the gallery's boundaries into a new context of the existing art path.

On March 28 – 30, 2024, BIMA will reopen with the project "Revitalizing Bangkok Through Art and Architecture: A Case Study on BIMA's Vision for the City's Future," which includes exhibitions of the artists mentioned above, in-depth seminars at BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY, a Photo Walk for architectural photography with Foto_momo, and movie screenings with Doc Club & Pub. The event aims to discuss art events and Gentrification (the transformation of a city to change its social class or "to make the city a posh area”).

In addition, for those who go to see the event, don't forget to look for graffiti on the walls of the Bhirasri building by Alex Face, which is scattered all around both inside and outside the building. Let's also join in remembering and reviving the spirit of the Bhirasri. 'From a glorious past to a present that is falling into decay, it is hoped that BIMA will have the opportunity to come back to life once again.'
