ถ้าจะให้พูดถึงหนึ่งในศิลปินไทยชั้นครู ที่มีผลงานและลายเส้นสะดุดตา กับการลดทอนรูปทรงให้อยู่ในรูปทรงง่ายๆ พร้อมกับสีที่ฉูดฉาดในช่วงยุค 70s ถึง 80s ก็คงต้องนึกถึง สุเชาว์ ศิษย์คเณศ ศิลปินแนวเอ็กซ์เพรสชันนิสม์ขั้นเทพ ชีวิตและผลงานของศิลปินท่านนี้น่าสนใจอย่างไรบ้าง ถ้าพร้อมแล้วก็ตามไปรับชมกันได้เลย!!
สุเชาว์ ศิษย์คเณศ เกิดวันที่ 15 พฤศจิกายน 2469 จังหวัดกรุงเทพมหานคร สำเร็จการศึกษาจากคณะจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรมและภาพพิมพ์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ในปี พ.ศ. 2502 หลังจากจบการศึกษาสุเชาว์ได้ทำงานเป็นอาจารย์สอนในโรงเรียนสาธิต จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และได้ลาออกมาเป็นศิลปินอิสระ ในปี พ.ศ. 2496 สุเชาว์ได้รับรางวัลเกียรตินิยม อันดับ 2 เหรียญเงิน (จิตรกรรม) จากการแสดงศิลปกรรมแห่งชาติ ครั้งที่ 4 ผลงานของเขาได้ถูกนำไปจัดแสดงผลงานใน นิทรรศการต่าง ๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น การแสดงศิลปกรรมร่วมสมัยหอศิลป์แห่งชาติ กรุงเทพมหานคร, มหกรรมศิลปฉลองครบรอบ 10 ปี หอศิลป์ พีระศรี กรุงเทพมหานคร, นิทรรศการ ศิลปไทย ณ ประเทศจีน และ นิทรรศการศิลปะระลึกถึงสุเชาว์ ศิษย์คเณศ จัดโดยกองทุนสุเชาว์ ศิษย์คเณศ ณ อาร์ติสท์แกเลอรี่

สุเชาว์ ศิษย์คเณศ นับว่าเป็นศิลปินแนวเอ็กซ์เพรสชันนิสม์ตัวยง และเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินผู้ทรงคุณค่าของวงการศิลปะไทย จุดเริ่มต้นของการเป็นศิลปินของสุเชาว์นั้นค่อนข้างยากลำบาก เนื่องจากพื้นฐานฐานะทางบ้านนั้นไม่ค่อยดี อาศัยอยู่กับพี่สาวเพียงสองคน แต่เพราะหัวใจที่รักในศิลปะทำให้สุเชาว์ต่อสู้ดิ้นรนจนได้มีโอกาสได้ร่ำเรียนศิลปะกับอาจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี หลังจากเรียนจบก็ได้เข้าสู่เส้นทางสายศิลปะแบบเต็มตัว

สุเชาว์เป็นศิลปินที่ยึดมั่นในหนทางการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของตัวเอง เขามักจะพูดอยู่บ่อยครั้งว่า “ผมมีสัจจะในการทำงาน ผมไม่เคยเขียนรูปตามใจคนอื่น” ภาพเขียนของเขาจึงหนักแน่นและซื่อตรงต่อความรู้สึกเสมอ ตะกอนความคิดและประสบการณ์ชีวิตของสุเชาว์ถูกตกผลึกมาและนำมาถ่ายทอดผ่านรูปทรงเรียบง่าย สุเชาว์มักใช้เนื้อสีหนาทิ้งรอยทีแปรงหนักแน่นอยู่ทั่วภาพ คล้ายนำเสนอร่องรอยการหยัดยืนในอุดมการณ์ศิลปะที่ผ่านมาให้กับผู้ชมอย่างตรงไปตรงมา สุเชาว์จึงถือเป็นสุดยอดศิลปินเอ็กซ์เพรสชันนิสม์ของประเทศไทยอย่างไม่มีข้อกังขา
ผลงานของสุเชาว์ จะให้ความสำคัญกับเรื่องรูปทรงและสี ซึ่งจะมีความโดดเด่นไม่เหมือนใคร โดยสุเชาว์ เคยกล่าวว่า “ผมว่าเรื่องสีเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ ที่พู่กันนี่ก็ต้องรู้ว่าจะหยุดตรงไหน จะยกขึ้นตรงไหน เมื่อไหร่จะเลิก เหมือนอย่างเราปรุงอาหารเมื่อไรมันจะพอดี” ยกตัวอย่างผลงานชิ้นสำคัญของศิลปินอย่าง “ชีวิตขึ้น ชีวิตลง” ที่เราจะเห็นถึงรูปทรงต่างๆภายในภาพ พร้อมกับเทคนิคการใช้สีของศิลปิน ทำให้ผลงานชิ้นนี้มีความโดดเด่น และปรากฎอยู่ในหนังสือบ่อยๆอีกด้วย
ผลงานของ สุเชาว์ ศิษย์คเณศ นับว่าเป็นที่ต้องการของเหล่าคอลเลกเตอร์มากมาย ซึ่งเราจะเห็นได้จากผลการประมูลของศิลปินในช่วงที่ผ่านมาอยู่เสมอ ราคาการประมูลในแต่ละครั้งก็แต่เลข 7 หลักเป็นว่าเล่น ยกตัวอย่างผลการประมูลในครั้งที่ผ่านมาของ Bangkok Art Auction ที่ได้นำผลงานของสุเชาว์ ที่ถ่ายทอดภาพของควายท่ามกลางท้องทุ่งและกองฟางเหลืองอร่าม ด้วยเทคนิคการปาดเกรียงจากสีเพียงไม่กี่สีที่ทำให้รู้สึกถึงไอความร้อนจากดวงอาทิตย์ และแสงสว่างเรืองๆ ซึ่งผลการประมูลก็จบไปในราคา 2,321,000 บาท!!

When it comes to one of the Thai master artists with standout works and striking lines, known for simplifying shapes into simple forms along with vibrant colors during the 70s to 80s era, one must think of Suchao Sisganes, a master of Expressionism. Suchao Sisganes was born on November 15, 1926, in Bangkok. He graduated from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, in 1959. After his graduation, Suchaow worked as a teacher at Chulalongkorn University Demonstration School and later resigned to become a freelance artist. In 1953, Suchaow was awarded the second-class honor Silver Medal (Painting) at the 4th National Art Exhibition. His works have been exhibited in various exhibitions, including the Contemporary Art Exhibition at the National Gallery in Bangkok, the 10th Anniversary Art Festival of the Silpa Bhirasri National Museum in Bangkok, the Thai Art Exhibition in China, and the Commemorative Art Exhibition for Suchaow Sisukanes, organized by the Suchao Sisganes Fund at the Artist Gallery.

Suchao is considered an avid Expressionist artist and was one of the most prized artists in the Thai art industry. His beginning as an artist was not easy because he did not come from a strong economic background and lived with only his sister. However, because of his love for art, Suchao struggled and finally had the opportunity to study art with Silpa Bhirasri. After his graduation, he fully embarked on the path of art.

Suchao was an artist who adhered to his own chosen path in terms of creating artworks. He often said, “I’m honest in my work. As a result, I have never painted pictures according to other people’s wishes.” Therefore, his paintings are always strong and truthful to his feelings. Suchao’s thoughts and life experiences were crystallised and conveyed through simple shapes. Suchao often used thick paint textures to leave brush marks all over the painting, as if to directly portray his stance for his artistic ideals in the past. Suchao was, without a doubt, a great Thai Expressionist artist.
The work of Suchao emphasizes on shapes and colors, which are distinctive and unlike any other. Suchao once said, “I think colours are important. As for the brush, you have to also know where to stop. Where to raise the tip of the brush up and when to stop. It is like how we season food in just the right amount.” An example of the artist's important work is “Rise and Fall of Life,” where we can see various shapes within the picture along with the artist's color technique, making this piece stand out and frequently appear in books as well.
The work of Suchao Sisganes is highly sought after by collectors, as evidenced by the consistently high auction results for the artist's work, often reaching into the seven-digit figures. For instance, a recent Bangkok Art Auction featured Suchao's work, depicting a buffalo in the middle of a field with piles of bright golden straws, which was sold for 2,321,000 baht. The artist achieved the scene with a palette knife technique using just a few colors, conveying the heat of the sun and a shimmering light.
Nearly the end of March, Bangkok Art Auction will present another piece by Suchao Sisganes titled "The Farmer", which captures a farmer gazing over a golden paddy field blending into the evening sky. The atmosphere of the paddy field is realistically expressed through the artist's bold brush strokes and emotional textures. This piece will start at 2,000,000 baht.
