หลายคนอาจจะเคยชม ละครเวทีที่ถูกดัดแปลงมาจากนวนิยายระดับตำนานอย่าง “ข้างหลังภาพ” ที่ถูกเขียนขึ้นโดย ศรีบูรพา ซึ่งตอนนี้ละครเวทีสุดยิ่งใหญ่ระดับบรอดเวย์อย่าง “WATERFALL a new musical” ที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจาก “ข้างหลังภาพ เดอะมิวสิคัล” ได้เปิดรอบแสดงให้เราได้ชมกันแล้ว ในการกลับมาของละครเวทีฟอร์มยักษ์ในครั้งนี้ ฉากภาพผลงานสีน้ำอันหลากหลาย ถูกรังสรรค์ขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็นฉากหลังของละครเวที และฉากหนึ่งที่เป็นไฮไลท์และเรียกเสียงว้าว ฮือฮาจากผู้ชมทั้งโรงละคร ก็คือ ฉากน้ำตกมิตาเกะ ซึ่งให้บรรยากาศเหมือนผู้ชมไปอยู่ที่น้ำตกจริงๆ เพราะนอกจากการสร้างน้ำตกหลายชั้นบนเวทีแล้ว ยังมีธารน้ำไหลจากน้ำตก เพิ่มอรรถรสการชมด้วยการที่ นพพร และ แคทเธอรีน เดินเล่น เต้นรำ ในลำธาร สาดน้ำใส่กัน ก่อให้เกิดโมเมนท์ดีๆของทั้งคู่ ที่สามารถส่งมาถึงผู้ชม จนอดอมยิ้มตามไม่ได้ นั่นจึงนำไปสู่ ความรักต้องห้าม ที่ทั้งคู่ไม่สามารถต้านทานแรงปรารถนาในใจได้
ตัวละครเอกใน “WATERFALL a new musical” จะไม่ใช่คุณหญิงกีรติ เหมือนละครเวทีเวอร์ชั่นอื่นๆ แต่ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนบทละครเล็กน้อย จากคุณหญิงกีรติ เป็น แคทเธอรีน ศิลปินสาวชาวอเมริกัน โดยเธอเป็นศิลปินที่ประสบความสำเร็จและมีชื่อเสียงมากในนิวยอร์ก แต่เมื่อเธอได้พบกับการสูญเสียพ่อและแม่ จึงทำให้เธอขาดแรงบันดาลใจ และหยุดวาดภาพ เธอตัดสินใจเดินทางกลับมายังสยามอีกครั้ง ที่ที่เป็นความทรงจำอันสวยงามในวัยเด็กของเธอ
ท่ามกลางกระแสความผันแปรที่เกิดขึ้นทั่วโลกทั้งการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองของสยามในยุค 2475 ความล้มเหลวของอเมริกาในยุคภาวะเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำครั้ง การเข้ามาของวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกที่เริ่มมีอิทธิพลในวงกว้างกับประเทศตะวันออกโดยเฉพาะญี่ปุ่นรวมถึงประเทศไทยในเวลานั้นด้วย ซึ่งจะเป็นชนวนสำคัญที่ทำให้เกิดสงครามโลกในเวลาต่อมา
เมื่อแคทเธอรีนกลับมาสยามและตกลงรับหมั้นกับเจ้าคุณอธิการ หนุ่มใหญ่รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ จึงทำให้เธอได้พบกับ นพพร เด็กหนุ่มรุ่นใหม่ไฟแรง ผู้ช่วยของเจ้าคุณอธิการ ที่ลุ่มหลงในความเป็นอเมริกัน
เนื่องจากเจ้าคุณต้องยุ่งกับการปฏิบัติภารกิจเพื่อสยามในญี่ปุ่น จึงสั่งให้ นพพร ดูแลและพา แคทเธอรีน ท่องเที่ยวในญี่ปุ่น จึงทำให้ทั้งคู่ได้มีเวลาใกล้ชิด แลกเปลี่ยนมุมมอง นพพรผู้ซึ่งอินกับความเป็นอเมริกันเป็นทุนเดิม ได้มารู้จักผู้หญิงอเมริกัน ที่ฉลาด สดใส ร่าเริง ตรงไปตรงมา แตกต่างจากสาวไทยในยุคนั้น จึงทำให้นพพร ตกหลุมรักแคทเธอรีน และเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นความรักสามเส้าระหว่าง แคทเธอรีน เจ้าคุณอธิการ และ นพพร
อย่างไรก็ตาม แคทเธอรีนได้เลือกทำในสิ่งที่คิดว่าถูกต้องและสมควร ด้วยการแต่งงานกับเจ้าคุณอธิการ และขาดการติดต่อกับนพพร สุดท้ายเธอก็ได้รู้หัวใจตัวเอง ว่ายังคงหวนคิดถึงภาพและความทรงจำดีๆที่น้ำตกมิตาเกะ ทำให้เธอเกิดแรงบันดาลใจ กลับมาวาดภาพได้อีกครั้ง ซึ่งภาพวาดสีน้ำนั้นมีชื่อว่า “คนเต้นรำที่น้ำตกมิตาเกะ” ซึ่งหากมองด้วยตา ก็จะเห็นเป็นเพียงภาพน้ำตกมิตาเกะ แต่มีเพียงเธอและนพพรเท่านั้น ที่มองด้วยใจ จะเห็นเค้าทั้งคู่เต้นรำด้วยกันที่นั่น
จากภาพน้ำตกที่แคทเธอรีนวาด ก็จะมีกลิ่นอายของศิลปะตะวันตกรวมอยู่ ซึ่งอาจมาจากอิทธิพลความรุ่งเรืองของศิลปินชาวฝรั่งเศสคนสำคัญอย่าง Claude Monet (โคลด์ โมเนต์: 1840–1926) โดยเฉพาะภาพวิวทิวทัศน์แบบ Impressionism (อิมเพรสชั่นนิสม์) ซึ่งถ้าพูดถึงผลงานของแคทเธอรีนนั้น ก็จะเป็นสไตล์ภาพวิวทิวทัศน์แบบ Impressionism (อิมเพรสชั่นนิสม์) ที่มีความสวยงามและเห็นถึงธรรมชาติที่แคทเธอรีนตั้งใจจะถ่ายทอดออกมา
ถ้าพูดถึงผลงานของศิลปินไทยที่มีผลงานสไตล์ Impressionism ในยุคเดียวกันกับตัวละครแคทเธอรีน ประเทศไทยเองก็มีศิลปินชื่อดังที่ถือเป็นศิลปินไทยคนแรกๆที่เริ่มวาดภาพสไตล์นี้จนมีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งวันนี้เราจะพาทุกท่านมาทำความรู้จักกับหนึ่งในศิลปินไทยระดับตำนานแนว Impressionism ที่ท่านได้ทุนไปศึกษาที่ญี่ปุ่นในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 และได้วาดภาพจากแรงบันดาลใจตอนอาศัยอยู่ที่นั่น เพื่อเพิ่มความอินและอรรถรสการเสพศิลป์ ก่อนที่จะไปรับชมละครเวที “WATERFALL a new musical”
“ศาสตราจารย์ (พิเศษ) ประกิต บัวบุศย์ เดิมชื่อ จิตร บัวบุศย์” (2454-2553) ศิลปินแห่งชาติ สาขาทัศนศิลป์ (จิตรกรรม) ผู้มีบทบาทสำคัญต่อการวางรากฐานจิตรกรรมสมัยใหม่ในยุคแรกของไทย ที่สร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะและวิชาการตลอดระยะเวลายาวนานกว่า 70 ปี ซึ่งมีทั้งผลงานจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรม และอื่นๆอีกมากมาย ด้วยสไตล์และเอกลักษณ์ลายเส้นอันโดดเด่นของศิลปิน ในสไตล์ Impressionism แสดงถึงเรื่องราวในธรรมชาติ สามารถถ่ายทอดอารมณ์ สร้างความรู้สึกประทับใจได้อย่างนุ่มนวล งดงาม เต็มเปี่ยมด้วยความรู้สึกที่ต้องการแสดงออกในขณะนั้น ผสานกับวิธีระบายสีที่หลากหลาย แสดงถึงความชำนาญและความเป็นอิสระในการสร้างผลงาน
เมื่อย้อนไปสมัยเรียน จิตร บัวบุศย์ จบจากเพาะช่างในปี 2473 ต่อมาได้สมัครรับราชการเป็นอาจารย์ที่โรงเรียนเพาะช่างที่ตนเองเคยเรียนเป็นเวลามากกว่า 10 ปี และได้รับทุนการศึกษาจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการให้เดินทางไปเรียนต่อที่สถาบันวิจิตรศิลป์ กรุงโตเกียว (Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts) ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ตั้งแต่ปี 2484 ที่นั่นจิตรได้เรียนทั้งภาคทฤษฎีและภาคปฏิบัติหลายแขนง และวิชาที่จิตรอินเป็นพิเศษเพราะชื่นชอบเป็นทุนเดิมอยู่แล้วคือการวาดภาพแนว Impressionism กับครูชาวญี่ปุ่นที่เป็นลูกศิษย์ของ โคลด์ โมเนต์ ส่งผลให้จิตรซึมซับจิตวิญญาณในการวาดภาพสไตล์นี้ ตลอดระยะเวลา 6 ปีที่จิตรใช้ชีวิตนักศึกษาปริญญาโทและศึกษาดูงานต่อในประเทศญี่ปุ่น เนื่องจากติดเรื่อง สงครามโลก จึงยังไม่สามารถกลับไทยได้ จิตรได้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะ หล่อหลอมแนวความคิด และมุมมองการใช้ชีวิต ซึ่งจิตรมักตระเวนวาดภาพวิวทิวทัศน์ของสถานที่ต่างๆ ที่ได้ไปเยือน ถ่ายทอดอารมณ์ความประทับใจที่ได้สัมผัสในขณะนั้น ซึ่งก็อาจคล้ายคลึงกับ แคทเธอรีน ผู้หลงใหลในศิลปะที่ชอบวาดภาพวิว ทิวทัศน์ และสถานที่ต่างๆที่มีความหมายและประทับใจต่อตัวเธอขณะที่ใช้ชีวิตในญี่ปุ่น
เมื่อได้รู้จักประวัติโดยย่อของ จิตร บัวบุศย์ กันไปบ้างแล้ว วันนี้เราได้นำผลงานแนว Impressionism ของท่าน ที่ได้สร้างสรรค์จากแรงบันดาลใจในช่วงที่ศึกษาอยู่ที่ญี่ปุ่นมาให้ทุกท่านรับชมกัน
ผลงานชิ้นแรก ในชื่อ “On the way to the Academy Ueno Park, Tokyo” (ปี 1942 หรือ พ.ศ. 2485) ภาพแนวอิมเพรสชั่นนิสม์ ที่ศิลปินถ่ายทอดอารมณ์ผ่านสีสรรของทิวทัศน์และดอกซากุระที่บานสะพรั่งตามเส้นทางภายในสวนสาธารณะขนาดใหญ่ของโตเกียว ที่เต็มไปด้วยสีสันของดอกซากุระสีชมพู พร้อมกับผู้คนที่นั่งพักอยู่บนม้านั่งภายในภาพ
ผลงานถัดมาคือ “Ekaho Onsen” (ปี 1942 หรือ พ.ศ. 2485) ภาพวาดในช่วงที่กำลังศึกษาอยู่ที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น โดยเราจะได้เห็นวิถีชีวิตต่างๆในช่วงเวลานั้นของชาวพื้นเมืองโตเกียว โดยเป็นภาพวิวทิวทัศน์ที่วาดด้วยเกรียงบนผืนผ้าใบ

Many people may have watched a musical that has been adapted from legendary novels like " Behind the Painting," written by Sriburapa. A grand Broadway-style stage play titled "WATERFALL: a new musical," inspired by "Behind the Painting The Musical," has opened for us to enjoy. With the return of this massive stage play, various scenes and artworks have been carefully crafted to serve as the backdrop. One particular scene has become a highlight and elicited enthusiastic cheers from the audience, is the Mitake Waterfall scene. It creates an atmosphere as if the audience is truly at the waterfall. Besides constructing multiple layers of waterfalls on the stage, there is also a flowing stream from the waterfall, adding to the viewing pleasure. When Nopporn and Catherine playfully dance and frolic in the stream, splashing water on each other, it creates delightful moments that can't help but make the audience smile. This leads to a forbidden love story where both cannot resist the desires in their hearts.
However, Catherine chose to do what she thought was right and deserved. She married the Minister and cut off contact with Nopporn. In the end, she discovered her own heart, which still held fond memories and beautiful images of Mitake Falls, inspiring her to return to painting once more. The watercolor painting was titled "Dancing by Mitake Falls." When looked at with the eyes, it appeared to be just Mitake Falls, but when seen with the heart, it showed only her and Nopporn dancing together there.
From Catherine's painting of Mitake Falls, there was a scent of blended artistry, possibly influenced by the brilliance of important French artist Claude Monet (Claude Monet: 1840–1926), especially in the Impressionism landscape style. Speaking of Catherine's work, it was in the Impressionism style of landscape painting that showcased the beauty and essence of nature that Catherine was determined to convey.
The main character in "WATERFALL, a New Musical" will not be Khunying Keerati, as in other stage versions, but the character will be slightly changed. Instead of Khunying Keerati, it will be Katherine, an American artist who is highly successful and renowned in New York. However, when she experiences the loss of her parents, it leaves her uninspired and unable to paint. She decides to return to Siam, where she has beautiful childhood memories.
Amidst the global upheavals of the time, including the change in the government of Siam in the year 1932, America's economic downturn, and the increasing influence of Western culture, especially in Japan and Thailand, which eventually led to World War II, Katherine returns to Siam and agrees to marry the Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This leads her to meet Nopporn, a young and energetic man who is the Minister's assistant and is infatuated with American culture.
As the Minister is busy with diplomatic missions for Siam in Japan, he instructs Nopporn to take care of and show Katherine around Japan, bringing them closer together. They exchange perspectives, and Nopporn, who had been fascinated by American culture, comes to know an intelligent, lively, and cheerful American woman who is different from Thai women of that era. This leads Nopporn to fall in love with Katherine, sparking a love triangle between Katherine, the Minister, and Nopporn.

If we talk about the works of Thai artists who produced artwork in the Impressionist style during the same era as the character Catherine, Thailand itself also had renowned artists who are considered among the first Thai artists to begin creating art in this style and have gained fame that continues to this day. Today, we will introduce you to one of the legendary Thai artists in the Impressionist genre who studied in Japan during World War II and drew inspiration from his time there to enhance your appreciation and taste for art before attending the theater to watch the musical "WATERFALL a new musical."
Professor Prakit Buabusaya, formerly known as Jitr Buabusaya (1911-2010), a national artist in the field of visual arts (painting), played a significant role in establishing modern Thai painting during the early era. He created artworks and contributed to academia for over 70 years, producing works of art such as paintings, sculptures, and many others. With his distinctive style and unique artistic identity, influenced by Impressionism, he depicted stories from nature, conveying emotions and leaving a soft, beautiful, and impressive impression, rich with the feelings he wished to express at that moment. He combined various painting techniques to showcase his expertise and creative freedom in producing his artworks."
Back in the days of schooling, Jitr Buabusaya graduated from the Vocational School in 1930. Subsequently, he applied for a government position as a teacher at the vocational school he had attended for over 10 years. He also received a scholarship from the Ministry of Education to study further at the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts in Japan in 1941. There, Jitr pursued both theoretical and practical aspects across various disciplines. His special interest was in Impressionism, and he was fortunate to have a Japanese teacher who was a disciple of Claude Monet, which deeply influenced Jitr's artistic spirit throughout his six years of studying there.
For the next six years, Jitr led a student's life and continued to explore his passion in Japan due to the ongoing World War, which prevented him from returning to Thailand. During this time, Jitr created art that blended his thoughts and perspectives on life. He often focused on depicting landscapes of the places he visited, conveying the emotions and impressions he felt during those moments. This artistic approach resonates with the life of Catherine, who was also captivated by the art of painting landscapes and places with meaning and significance, during her time living in Japan.
After getting to know a brief history of Jitr Buabusya, today we bring you all to admire his Impressionist artworks inspired by his experiences while studying in Japan.
The first piece, titled "On the way to the Academy Ueno Park, Tokyo" (1942), is an Impressionist painting where the artist conveys emotions through the vibrant colors of the landscape and the cherry blossoms that bloom along the paths inside the large public garden of Tokyo. The painting is filled with the pink hues of cherry blossoms, accompanied by people sitting on benches within the image.
The next work is "Ekaho Onsen" (1942) It is a painting created during his time studying in Japan. In this artwork, you will see various aspects of the lives of the people of Tokyo during that period. It is a landscape painting drawn with watercolors on canvas.
Today, we also had the opportunity to get to know a Thai Impressionist artist from the same era as Catherine, who is part of the stage play "WATERFALL a new musical." Those interested in art can now follow the new narrative of love between Nopporn and Catherine, which is different from ‘Behind the Painting The Musical’ we are used to. You can watch "WATERFALL a new musical" which is a collaboration between the Thai theater team, directed by Boy Takonkiet Viravan, and featuring world-class talents from Broadway, such as Josh Dela Cruz (known for his role in the stage play "Aladdin" and as the host of the popular children's show "Blue's Clues & You!"), Danielle Hope (known for her roles in various stage plays like "The Wizard of Oz" and "Les Misérables"), and Jon Jon Briones (famous for his role in the stage play "Miss Saigon"). Additionally, the script and songs for this globally acclaimed production are written by the Tony Award-winning Richard Maltby, Jr., and the highly talented composer David Shire, an Oscar-winning artist for Best Original Score.
WATERFALL," a new musical, will be performed entirely in English. However, Thai fans need not worry because there will be Thai subtitles throughout the entire show.
