วัสดุที่เลือกใช้ในการเก็บรักษาผลงานศิลปะควรเป็น วัสดุประเภทไร้กรดหรือ Acid-free ที่มีค่า pH ที่เป็นกลาง หรือ pH 7 ไม่มีการใช้สารเคมีที่ทำให้เกิดกรดในกระบวนการผลิต ซึ่งวัสดุประเภทไร้กรดมีหลากหลาย ขึ้นอยู่กับผลงานศิลปะที่เราจะทำบรรจุภัณฑ์และหีบห่อ เช่น กระดาษไร้กรด ลูกฟูกไร้กรด โฟมไร้กรด เป็นต้น
The selected materials for preserving works of art should be acid-free, with a neutral pH of 7, which means they do not contain chemicals that produce acids during their manufacturing process. There is a variety of acid-free materials depending on the artwork we will package, such as acid-free paper, acid-free cardboard, acid-free foam, etc.

Besides acid-free paper, we can also use Tyvek to cover the front of the work or to make envelopes for storing the artwork. Tyvek is a material that resembles paper, made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fibers, which are pressed and heat-sealed without weaving, making it dense, lightweight, tear-resistant, and resistant to moisture, chemicals, insects, and mold. It is also breathable, which makes it suitable for use as acid-free paper, for example, to make envelopes, folders, wrapping, covering, or separating our paper artwork.

If we want to store the artwork in a see-through sleeve that allows us to view the artwork while it's being stored, we can also use Mylar. Mylar is a type of polyester film, a clear film that withstands heat well, is strong, and resistant to moisture and chemicals. It can be made into clear sleeves or larger folders to store paper artwork for an extended period effectively. However, caution is required since Mylar will come into direct contact with the artwork. Therefore, works made from charcoal, crayons, and pastels may not be suitable for storage with Mylar because it can pull dust-like pigments off the image.

Another thing to consider is the various adhesives such as sticky paper, adhesive tape, and double-sided tape that will be used with artwork. You must choose sticky paper that does not leave adhesive residue, can be easily removed without tearing, is resistant to chemicals, does not absorb water, and has moderately sticky adhesive. Once applied, it should not cause the paper to tear or become damaged, and must not be applied directly onto the artwork under any circumstances!!
