What's up, art lovers? It's already the end of October, and this week there are some interesting art exhibitions for art lovers to enjoy. Here are some of the exhibitions you can check out!
First up is the exhibition titled 'Underground' by Mit Jai Inn, a solo exhibition designed to reflect on limitations and constraints. What makes this exhibition special is that it is presented alongside 'All Under Heaven' by Ariana Chaivaranon, creating a unique dual showcase. Ariana Chaivaranon serves as the curator for both exhibitions.

Underground: Mit Jai Inn is the artist’s first exhibition made to be experienced in near-total darkness. Even the bright, brilliantly colored abstractions that comprise most of Mit Jai Inn’s oeuvre, however, operate in calculated ambiguity. His works unfold through evocative metaphors— tunnels, sunrises and sunsets, gifts—inviting each viewer on a unique journey into a future we are not yet conscious of. Underground buries us in a primordial cave: a space humans have historically used for imprisonment, rest, divination, and re-imaging the world outside. In the dim light, with our sight limited, we turn inward. We allow our eyes to adjust. We find that we can, in fact, see in the dark.

The exhibitions emerging from this collaboration unfold from spaces “under”: places of inferiority, growth potential, surveillance, secrecy, hierarchy, rhizomatic networks, obedience, and fomenting revolution. Underground and All Under Heaven take up two complimentary angles on vision—the panopticon and the oculus—to illuminate how limitations on what is visible can both impede and catalyze our movement toward alternative political futures. As we descend into Mit Jai Inn’s Underground, we encounter ourselves in the human-scale sculptures imprisoned in fabric chambers. Immersion in physical and metaphorical darkness prompts us to recalibrate our guiding values and forge a new path toward freedom.

All Under Heaven: Ariana Chaivaranon plays with the metaphors that uphold totalitarian rule. The series of paintings explores the symbolic equation between “sky” and “emperor” and deconstructs the false divinity ascribed to autocrats in the region. In Chinese and Thai, the word “sky” doubles as a reference to the all-powerful ruler. The Chinese phrase “天下 (all under heaven)” historically referred to the expansive world ruled by the divine emperor. Today, the concept is weaponized to justify China’s neo-colonial expansion into Southeast Asia.

Encounter the exhibition "MY LIFE WORKS," which showcases the lifelong artistic achievements of 78-year-old artist PIRA OGAWA, the recipient of the Popular Vote award from the Bangkok Illustration Fair 2022. He has been using drawing tools to create artwork in his own unique style for over 60 years.
PIRA OGAWA is a seasoned artist who was first discovered at the Bangkok Illustration Fair 2021. With a distinctive creative identity that utilizes drawing tools to create artworks, incorporating vibrant colors, unique styles, skill development, sharpness, and narratives of drawing insects to treat hearing loss caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, he received the Popular Vote award. His works were showcased alongside other renowned Guest Artists at the Bangkok Illustration Fair 2022. In the following year, he had the opportunity to organize a group exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) and another solo exhibition at River City Bangkok.
You can enjoy a solo exhibition by the artist, organized by BKKIF, happening, MMAD, and curated by dexembell. It takes time to immerse yourself and truly listen to the profound stories of the artist. The artworks are carefully selected and presented in two segments, representing happiness, fun, and diverse perspectives. LANNA ANNAL ANNEX by Sudaporn Teja further explores the connection between Lanna Kingdom and its descendants in the contemporary world. In this continuation of its previous show in ‘LANNAANNAL’ in Chiang Mai, Sudaporn Teja delves into two stories, entangled by their homeland, of King Inthawichayanon and a hairdresser with Lanna lineage. Focusing on the act of hair extensions appearing in the short video, which contrasted the act of cutting one’s own hair in her previous show, Sudaporn bridges the past of her heritage to the present. While cutting hair signifies equivocal symbolisms of either protesting or surrendering, all the while, unknowingly assimilating into the paramounted influence, the process of haircare and hair extensions untangles the overlooked consequences leading to today.

The video investigates the remnants of her birthplace, its former empire, and the king of the late empire, believed to protect herself and her family until today. As dim light reflects golden dust from the moondial onto a sundial of a broken hairpin, and sawdust echoes the stories hidden by Siam state, the faint glint threads us back to consider the shreds of messages left by the last king of an abdicated Kingdom. LANNA ANNAL ANNEX let us ponder the omitted history, swallowed by the centralization of Siam state.

พบกับนิทรรศการ "ความทรงจำอันงดงาม" โดยศาสตราจารย์เกียรติศักดิ์ ชานนนารถ ศิลปินแห่งชาติ สาขาทัศนศิลป์ (จิตรกรรม) พ.ศ.2549 ซึ่งรวบรวมผลงานสร้างสรรค์กว่า 50 ชิ้น มาจัดแสดงให้ชมทั้งผลงานประเภทวาดเส้น สีน้ำ สีน้ำมันและสีอะคริลิค ซึ่งเป็นผลงานที่เกิดจากการเดินทางไปยังสถานที่ต่างๆ เช่น การพานักศึกษาไปทัศนศึกษานอกสถานที่ การเดินทางท่องเที่ยวไปในต่างประเทศ จนเกิดเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานขึ้นเป็นความทรงจำที่งดงาม และเป็นที่มาของชื่อนิทรรศการ ใครที่สนใจก็สามารถไปรับชมกันได้ ณ พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป อาคาร 4 ตั้งแต่วันนี้ ถึง 26 พฤศจิกายน 2566

These artworks were inspired by various journeys, such as educational trips and international travels, creating beautiful and unforgettable memories. The exhibition is open for public viewing at the National Gallery, Building 4, starting from today until November 26, 2023. Anyone interested is welcome to come and enjoy the exhibition.

พบกับ Tang Chang (1934-1990) : Non-Forms นิทรรศการแสดงเดี่ยวของจ่าง แซ่ตั้ง ที่จะถูกจัดขึ้นที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ชื่อดังระดับโลกอย่างศูนย์ศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมแห่งชาติจอร์จ ปอมปีดู (Centre Pompidou) ประเทศฝรั่งเศส ในวันที่ 20 ตุลาคม 2566 ถึงวันที่ 8 เมษายน 2567 โดยมี Yin Ker และ Marcella Lista เป็นภัณฑารักษ์ร่วม โดย จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง ถือเป็นศิลปินไทยคนแรกและถือเป็นศิลปินเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้คนที่ 3 ต่อจาก Latiff Mohidin จากมาเลเซีย และ Bagyi Aung Soe จากเมียนมาร์ ที่ได้มีโอกาสไปแสดงผลงานในพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้ ใครที่เดินทางไปเที่ยวฝรั่งเศสก็สามารถไปรับชมนิทรรศการได้ ห้ามพลาดเด็ดขาด!!

Encounter Tang Chang (1934-1990): Non-Forms, a solo exhibition by Tang Chang, which will be held at the renowned Centre Pompidou, the world-class museum of art and culture in France, from October 20, 2023, to April 8, 2024. Curated by Yin Ker and Marcella Lista, Tang Chang is considered the first Thai artist and the third artist from Southeast Asia to exhibit at this museum, following Latiff Mohidin from Malaysia and Bagyi Aung Soe from Myanmar.
